S&S Announces EPA Lab

LA CROSSE, WI (January 7, 2008) S&S® Cycle announces its new in-house emissions certification laboratory located in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Dave Rash is Racing & Performance

With this lab, S&S has the capability to complete motorcycle exhaust and evaporative emissions testing in accordance with requirements set by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and CARB (California Air Resources Board). S&S will use this lab to help expand the number of emissions-compliant components and engines in the S&S Catalog and S&S will also be offering services to support customers with their aftermarket and vehicle emissions testing needs.

S&S Director of Business Development, Michael Scaletta, said “The implementation and deployment of this emissions certification lab is strategically important for S&S in order to be at the forefront of providing compliant aftermarket engines and components, as well as providing certification services to our customers. The lab provides S&S with a long-run competitive advantage in the industry—S&S will support emissions-compliant Proven-Performance engines and aftermarket components for years to come,” continued Scaletta.

The new emissions certification laboratory accommodates nearly 2,000 square feet of space in the S&S La Crosse facility. The lab houses a REAL TIME Instruments, Inc. chassis dynamometer, CAI analytical equipment, a sealed housing for evaporative emissions measurement, vehicle fuel preparation room, vehicle soak area, bottle gas room, and control room. The lab will meet the requirements described in title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations for both on-highway and off-road recreational motorcycles, as well as ATV’s. In addition, on-highway motorcycle evaporative testing can be completed in compliance with CARB’s requirements.

With the new emissions certification lab, S&S will be able to support motorcycle manufactures with their EPA and CARB certification endeavors. This support will include performing general emission testing on vehicles, as well as completing full emissions certification programs (emissions testing, mileage accumulation, and paperwork).

The S&S emissions certification laboratory will also be available to support aftermarket parts suppliers with their executive order testing needs, enabling them to provide the industry with emissions-compliant aftermarket parts. Furthermore, the certification lab will be available to perform research-based testing in addition to running the FTP (federal test procedures) tests. Continuous exhaust emissions measurement can be provided during tests, with an additional seven thermocouple connections, two wideband air-fuel ratio sensors, and engine RPM channels accessible for monitoring various engine operating parameters.

General services the lab can provide include:

1. Emissions testing for obtaining EPA and CARB certification for a new vehicle or engine;

2. Verifying the aftermarket emissions compliance of a part;

3. Evaporative emissions testing for California vehicles; and

4. Submission of paperwork for EPA and CARB certification applications.

Testing services available to customers include:

FTP tailpipe exhaust emissions test: certification test with only final bag results being measured and reported;
Modal exhaust emissions test: continuous analysis of tailpipe emissions (HC, CO, CO2, and NOx) with additional channels available including up to seven thermocouple connections, two wideband air-fuel ratio sensors, and engine RPM channels;
Motorcycle diurnal and hot soak evaporative emissions testing; and
EU drive cycles exhaust emissions testing.
Stay tuned for further press releases from S&S regarding the emissions certification lab. Pricing, availability and other administrative details will be released in the near future.
