TIG Welding 101

D&D Utilizes TIG Welding

The team at D&D Performance Enterprises utilizes TIG welding to manufacturer all of their exhaust systems. We have had many questions sent in asking "what is a TIG weld and how are your pipes assembled?" We have a brief explanation below:

TIG Welding 101
TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding. Also called GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) and Heliarc®.

In TIG welding, an arc is formed between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the metal being welded. An inert gas is fed through the torch to shield the electrode and molten weld pool.

A slower process than MIG, it produces a more precise weld and can be used at lower amperages for thinner metal and can be used on exotic metals. (There weld work is close to flawless.)

TIG is used by many manufacturers who prefer a more precise, perfect finish that requires little to no finish work. It's an ideal process for D&D.

For certain type of work TIG is required, like welding chrome moly for some racing organizations. Intricate work, like gunsmithing is also well suited to TIG. TIG is most similar to gas welding in technique.
