VIDEO on XR1200: One of the Reasons D&D Love Racing!

Well, it all started back with the founder, Dave Rash, aka The Pope of Pipe, couldn't find a pipe for his racebike. That was in the '70s and 250,000 pipes later he's still building pipes for motorcycles.

The Pope got out of racing himself but has been building pipes for multiple Grand National Champion Chris Carr Racing for many years.

Below is a video from Cycle World that imparts the passion and the trill of riding on two wheels with the XR1200 production Harley and the XR750 racer. Enjoy!

This is not the first time that Harley has conceived of a street machine inspired by the hugely successful XR750 racer. Back in the 1980s, it produced the XR1000, which had an XR-style top end on Sportster cases, though the overall styling of that motorcycle was less like the racebike's.

That limited-production motorcycle was based on the stripped-down XLX Sportster, the XR-1000 was fitted with special cylinder heads similar to those found on the racing version.

These had intake ports entering the rear of both cylinders fed by dual carburetors on the right-hand side, and front-exiting exhaust ports emptying into high-mounted dual mufflers that exited on the left.

The modifications resulted in an output of nearly 70 horsepower, a figure only dreamed of for other Sportsters, and gave the XR-1000 acceleration unequaled by any other street motorcycle Harley had ever built.
